Take Care of Sarasota garnered 23 blood donors on Friday, July 3 — the competition is on! Donating blood saves lives.

Take Care Private Duty Home Health invites all caregivers, family members, and office staff: please consider donating. It takes approximately 30 minutes of your time to donate blood. According to SCBB, one donation helps save up to three lives.

SCBB is reporting a shortage of blood supply for the summer months. Blood drives account for 60 percent of the blood collected to help meet the needs of our hospitals and patients, according to SCBB’s website. Especially during the summer months in Florida with the threat of tropical storms and hurricanes, it is important for the blood banks to have a hearty supply. Please consider donating, if you are willing and able.

A few things to know before you donate blood, according to SCBB:

  • You must be at least 17 years old
  • You must weigh at least 110 pounds
  • Review SCBB’s website for any other health conditions or medications that may prevent you from donating blood
  • Be sure to wait 8 weeks between your blood donations

Visit SCBB’s website for a comprehensive explanation of what to expect before, during, and after you donate: http://scbb.org/donateblood/index.htm.

I thought I could handle my recovery on my own. However, having been under the care of an experienced nurse, I now realize the value of the one-on-one nurse.
